The project involves the design of a freestanding loft structure for a couple and their dog, inside a condo in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, NY. The loft is conceived as an independent sculptural piece, emerging from the repetition and variation of continuous ribbons of laminated wood that help resolve the stair and loft surface while maintaining the continuity of the whole. The functionality is also key to the project, so the loft was designed to be ample enough so as to function as both a study and an intimate sleeping area, but no too large that it would overshadow or constrain the kitchen below. The project emerges from the idea of movement, continuity, repetition and variation, both visually and also from the standpoint of fabrication and construction.
